New Luanda Airport: A Billion-Dollar Landmark

The new António Agostinho Neto International Airport will be inaugurated on November 10, with an investment of 2.8 billion dollars, promising to boost the Angolan economy.

The new António Agostinho Neto International Airport in Luanda, with a cost of 2.8 billion dollars (2.5 billion euros), will be inaugurated on the upcoming November 10, announced today by Angola's Minister of Transport. Ricardo de Abreu presented to the press the progress of the airport works, which began in 2013 as a public-private partnership, dissolved in 2017, when the Angolan government assumed it as a public investment, financed by China with 1.4 billion dollars (1.2 billion euros). The Angolan minister stated that the investment cost — close to 3 billion dollars (2.7 billion euros) — "is not much" given the size and relevance of the project in terms of return for the Angolan economy.

According to the minister, certification should be granted by the end of October this year. He also announced the launch, in the same month, of an international tender for the long-term concession of the management of the New Luanda International Airport (NAIL). Concession Tender "We are currently preparing the documentation to launch the tender for the concession of the new Luanda International Airport (...), to inform international partners about our expected revenue from this airport," he emphasized. The Minister of Transport of Angola also highlighted that the main challenge lies in human capital, emphasizing the creation of a national civil aviation academy within the new airport.
